The official Hallmarking guide supplied by the Birmingham Assay Office.. In the UK it is illegal to sell or describe any item as gold, silver or platinum or palladium unless it is hallmarked and weighs more than 1g if gold or palladium, g if silver or g for platinum. The office was established in to supervise the hallmarking of each piece of gold and silver throughout Ireland. What is Hallmarking? Hallmarking is when precious metals such as silver, gold, platinum and palladium are officially marked by a stamp or a series of strikes.

Regulation 2(2) provides that any article of gold or silver or gold and silver & platinum book of minimum fineness manufactured before is now exempt. If you work primarily with silver, gold, platinum, palladium, or all of the above, you’ll need to do a little research to check whether your pieces will require hallmarking.

According to current legislation, if your pieces are made entirely or partially made with silver, gold, platinum or palladium and not covered under the Assay Offices.
